About the Volume Converter

This volume converter changes a liquid or space measurement from one unit to another. It handles metric units (milliliters, liters, cubic meters), US kitchen and liquid units (teaspoons, tablespoons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, gallons), the UK gallon, and cubic inches and cubic feet.

Enter an amount, pick the units, and the answer appears with the factor used. The table underneath shows the same volume in every unit, which helps when scaling recipes, mixing garden products or checking a tank size.

How to use it

  1. Type the amount in Value.
  2. Choose the unit you have in From.
  3. Choose the unit you want in To.
  4. Read the answer, or use the table to see the amount in every unit.

Conversion formula

Every unit is stored as an exact number of liters:

result = value × (liters per From unit) ÷ (liters per To unit)

  • 1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches = 3.785411784 L
  • 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.54609 L
  • 1 US quart = 1/4 gallon = 0.946352946 L
  • 1 US pint = 1/8 gallon = 0.473176473 L
  • 1 US cup = 8 US fl oz = 236.5882365 mL
  • 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL
  • 1 US tablespoon = 1/2 fl oz = 14.78676478125 mL
  • 1 US teaspoon = 1/3 tablespoon = 4.92892159375 mL
  • 1 cubic inch = 16.387064 mL; 1 cubic foot = 28.316846592 L

The cup used here is the US customary cup of 8 fluid ounces. US nutrition labels use a rounded 240 mL cup, and metric cups in some countries are 250 mL.

US vs UK gallons and worked examples

The US gallon and the UK gallon are different sizes. A UK gallon is about 20% larger, so fuel economy in miles per UK gallon looks higher than the same car's figure in miles per US gallon. Pick the right one in the list before you convert. Pints, quarts, cups and fluid ounces in this converter are all US sizes.

Gallons to liters. 5 US gallons × 3.785411784 = 18.93 L.

Liters to fluid ounces. A 2 L bottle × 33.814 = 67.6 US fl oz.

Tank size. A tank holding 10 cubic feet holds 10 × 7.48052 = 74.8 US gallons.

Converting cups of flour or sugar into grams depends on the ingredient, not just the volume. Use the cups to grams converter for that.
