About the GPA calculator

This GPA calculator works out your grade point average from letter grades and credit hours. Enter up to eight classes and you get your semester GPA on a standard 4.0 scale.

If any classes are honors, AP or IB, a weighted GPA appears too. And if you know your current GPA and how many credits you've already earned, the calculator combines them with this semester's grades to give your new cumulative GPA. Schools use different scales and weighting rules, so check the details below against your school's policy.

How to use it

  1. For each class, choose the letter grade in Class 1 grade, Class 2 grade and so on.
  2. Enter the Credits for each class.
  3. Set the Type to Regular, Honors (+0.5) or AP / IB (+1.0).
  4. For a cumulative GPA, enter your Current GPA (optional) and Credits already earned.
  5. Read your semester GPA, plus the weighted and cumulative GPA if they apply.

The formula

Each letter grade is turned into grade points, multiplied by the class credits, and the total is divided by total credits:

GPA = Σ(grade value × credits) ÷ Σ credits

GradeA+ / AA−B+BB−C+CC−D+DD−F
Points4.03.73.33.02.72.32.01.71.31.00.70
  • Weighted GPA adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP / IB to each grade before averaging. An F gets no bonus.
  • Cumulative GPA = (current GPA × credits earned + this semester's grade points) ÷ (credits earned + this semester's credits). It uses the unweighted semester points.
  • Classes with no grade or no credits are skipped.

Worked example

Take four classes: an A in a 3-credit class, a B+ in a 4-credit class, an A− in a 3-credit class and a B in a 3-credit class.

  • A: 4.0 × 3 = 12.0 points
  • B+: 3.3 × 4 = 13.2 points
  • A−: 3.7 × 3 = 11.1 points
  • B: 3.0 × 3 = 9.0 points

That's 45.3 points over 13 credits, so the semester GPA is 45.3 ÷ 13 = 3.485.

If the A class was honors, its grade counts as 4.5 for the weighted GPA, giving (13.5 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 9.0) ÷ 13 = 3.600 weighted.

Now suppose you already have a 3.2 GPA over 30 credits. Your new cumulative GPA is (3.2 × 30 + 45.3) ÷ (30 + 13) = 141.3 ÷ 43 = 3.286.

Different schools, different scales

There is no single GPA scale. Some schools give an A+ 4.3 points, while this calculator counts it as 4.0. Some don't use plus and minus grades at all. Weighting also varies: some high schools add a full point for honors, some add nothing, and many colleges recalculate an unweighted GPA from your transcript when you apply.

Pass/fail classes usually don't count toward GPA, so leave them out. Retaken classes may replace the old grade or be averaged with it, depending on the school. When in doubt, your school's handbook or registrar has the official method, and your transcript GPA is the one that counts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

Multiply each class's grade points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. A 4-credit B (3.0) and a 3-credit A (4.0) give (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

What is a weighted GPA?

A GPA that gives extra points for harder classes. Here, honors classes add 0.5 and AP or IB classes add 1.0, so an A in AP counts as 5.0.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Multiply your current GPA by the credits you've earned to get your past grade points, add this semester's points, and divide by all credits combined. Enter both values and the calculator does it.

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?

Not on this calculator, where A+ and A are both 4.0. Some schools give an A+ 4.3, so check your school's scale.

Do pass/fail classes count toward GPA?

Usually not, because they don't carry grade points. Leave them out of the calculator unless your school says otherwise.
