About the Weighted Grade calculator

Most courses don't treat every assignment equally. Homework might be worth 20% of the grade, tests 30% and the final exam 50%. This weighted grade calculator combines your scores using those weights and gives your overall course grade as a percentage and a letter grade.

You can enter up to six graded items. If you haven't been graded on everything yet, just enter what you have. The calculator scales the result to the weight graded so far, so you can see where you stand mid-semester.

How to use it

  1. Enter your score as a percentage in Item 1 score.
  2. Enter that item's Weight as a percentage of the course grade.
  3. Repeat for Item 2 score, Item 3 score and so on, up to six items. Leave unused items blank.
  4. Read your weighted grade, letter grade and the total weight entered.

The formula

Each score is multiplied by its weight, and the sum is divided by the total weight:

weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weight

  • If the weights add up to 100%, this is simply the sum of score × weight.
  • If they add up to less than 100%, the result is your average over the work graded so far. A note tells you the weights don't total 100%.
  • Scores above 100% are allowed for extra credit.
  • An item is ignored unless it has both a score and a weight.

The letter grade uses a common US scale:

PercentLetterPercentLetter
97+A+77–79.99C+
93–96.99A73–76.99C
90–92.99A−70–72.99C−
87–89.99B+67–69.99D+
83–86.99B63–66.99D
80–82.99B−60–62.99D−

Worked example

Say your course grade is made of homework (20%), a midterm (30%) and a final exam (50%). You scored 92% on homework, 85% on the midterm and 78% on the final.

  • Homework: 92 × 0.20 = 18.4
  • Midterm: 85 × 0.30 = 25.5
  • Final: 78 × 0.50 = 39.0

Adding those gives 82.9%, which is a B−.

Before the final, only 50% of the grade was known. Entering just homework and the midterm gives (18.4 + 25.5) ÷ 0.50 = 87.8%, a B+. That's your standing on the work graded so far, and the final will move it up or down.

Points, percentages and tips

If your class uses points instead of percentages, turn each item into a percentage first: divide points earned by points possible and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 50 is 90%.

Some syllabi list weights as points, like "exams 300 points, homework 100 points". You can enter those as the weights, since only their proportions matter. 300 and 100 give exactly the same result as 75% and 25%.

Your teacher's grading scale may differ from the one shown here, especially for plus and minus cutoffs, so treat the letter grade as a guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. With weights that total 100%, you can skip the division.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator divides by the total weight you entered, so the result is your average on the work graded so far. This is useful mid-semester.

Can I enter points instead of percentages?

Convert each item's points to a percentage first, such as 18 out of 20 = 90%. Weights can be points or percentages, since only their ratios matter.

What letter grade is an 85%?

On the scale used here, 85% is a B. Schools and teachers can use different cutoffs.

Can my score be over 100%?

Yes. Scores up to 200% are accepted, so extra credit can be included.
